Post title: Locations
Adele: Someone Like You

Ed Sheeran: A Team

Cold Play : Paradise

Christina Perry: Thousand Years

I really like these shots however, we know we cannot film in the dark and would have to look at ways to achieve this in editing. We could use candles though!

Miley Cyrus: Wrecking Ball

We could create our own set design - rubble, buildings etc are available we would just have to persuade our star to be voyeuristic!
Location ideas that we could do. In our area we have:

  • a beach
  • a stately home
  • The Humber Bridge
  • A town centre
  • a river
  • fields
  • parks
You need to do this to INFORM your planning and CREATIVITY.
Example

Post title:  Research: Codes, conventions and camera shots

The first thing i noticed was : sepia, black and white
Starts – CU [ diegetic sound is not conventional] 3 shots in – POV shot. ECU obvious narrative – not clear it’s an MV at this point.

Dissolves out – this could be a good technique for us.
LS
Approx 12 shots in follows her/ different camera shots eg LS/ POV/ around the park – we can do this. Locations need further research. .
Tracking – more difficult for us to do as we have to keep the camera steady.
She’s walking into camera on about shot 17 – we could do this quite easily. Easier than tracking.
Long MS of her back with arms out – not sure I would want to use this as it isn’t saying much to me.
First cut to a different location shot 35 approx – in a shopping mall.

We can do this. Low angle.
Shot 43 approx – she is obviously homeless and the narrative is clearer. Shots are more disorientated.

Around shot 50 we get Ed Sheeran. No performance shots yet.

Nice pull focus around shot 62 – she’s crying.
Background speed up – we can undercrank like this.
Nice technique for speeding up time. We would need to learn this skill on Final Cut ProX.
Really long shot lengths and 2.31 there have been no performance shots.

This is not a conventional music video and it doesn’t follow the codes of Goodwin however it does follow Vernallis diegesis and narrative as editing makes the story/ meaning clear. There are no performance shots to sell the artist up to this point. It is simply narrative. It’s black and white throughout. Very long ASL and no voyeurism.
Talk to my group about:
  • Black and white
  • Undercranking
  • Focus pulls
  • Locations
  • ASL
  • walking into camera or any ideas for tracking shots.
  • Performance aspects

Final Cut Pro x

There are many tutorials online - you should never be stuck!

OCR support lesson.

Camera Shots : make sure you use a variety in your music video/ documentary.

Final Cut Pro - getting started

Free tutorials - i would advise you to look at this, watch and go back to it often!

Initial setup

1] Getting the Mac ready. If you try and open FinalCut and the window disappears before opening, you will need to delete a file as follows.
Finder – own user.  Library  - preferences  - Final Cut user data
Trash/ delete : final cut express 4 pref – make sure you get the right file!
If in doubt ask!

2] Connecting your camcorder handout.

3]  Open Final Cut Pro
Select Pal

Use DV-Pal
Primary scratch disk : make yourself a new folder in documents with a clear name and select this.
4] Now final cut will be open. Go to Final Cut  menu – system settings – you will now follow Specifying Scratch Disks.  Set the first one to the same doc you chose when you opened FinalCut and choose Primary Scratch Disk.

In Preferences you will also be able to click General and select the Levels of Undo to 50 actions [ see above]
We can set up multiple scratch as we  have an external hard drive. Set this - you will need to create a folder.

5] Saving Projects

Final Cut  – Preferences : make sure this is set to every twenty minutes.

Keep at most – set to 25
Using File – save project as is a good idea. I sometimes save my project as several times when I have paused capture to ensure I have files I can go back to if there is a capture error eg drop files.

Make sure Final Cut is set up before you start to capture any film. Otherwise you will just have to do it all again!
make sure you save as on the external hard drive.

Getting familiar with the software is easy. Watch this video link:

6]  Capturing footage

There are several ways to capture footage : Batch Capture and Capture Now– we are going to use the simplest which is Capture Now.
Make sure the camera is switched on and the camera is set to playback.
Watch this video.

File – Capture  - It will say initialising capture

You will see your film footage in the centre viewer. There is a play/ rewind/ fastforward button under it.
Click play to play your filming.

Look to the right and you will see Clip – Now—Batch
When you want to capture your footage click Now – you are telling it to Capture Now.
To stop capture, simply press escape.

Batch capture is easier when you have a lot of footage.

Final Cut   - Putting poster frames on to the timeline

1.  After capture you will see your poster frames in the left hand browser.
2.  Watch each poster frame and name it.
3.  Choose the first poster frame and double click it so the sequence opens and you can see it in the middle window – the viewer.
4.  Use the space bar to start and stop play.
5.  Mark IN by pressing ‘I’ on the keypad
6.  Choose the end point by pressing ‘o’ on the keyboard to mark out.
7.  Once you have marked in and out you are ready to put it on the timeline. Unless you have constructed title slides, your timeline will be empty and your scrubber bar will be positioned at the very beginning. If you have created title slides make sure your scrubber bar is at the end of them.
8.  Now, to move your marked sequence click with your mouse in the centre of the clip you have in the viewer. A small transparent box will appear where you click. Hold the mouse button and drag the cursor over the canvas to the right window [viewer]. There are a selection of options. The top option  is insert. Move the cursor carrying the transparent box over insert and release your mouse button.
9.  Look at the timeline, notice there is a block positioned at the beginning. This is the first shot of your sequence.
10.               Repeat this process until all the poster frame is into the timeline.
11.               It is a good idea to create a bin to put ‘done’ poster frames in to. This way when you save and close then come back and carry on, you will know where you are. Never do half a poster frame, its tricky spotting exactly where you are!
12.               To create a bin select file menu at the top, scroll down  to New and select Bin.
13.               In your left hand browser box you will see a bin. Name it. You can move ‘Done’ poster frames in to the bin. You can always get them out again later.

Title slides

1.  ‘effects’ in the grey box browser Drag a text type onto the timeline – I choose crawl….
2.  Double click on timeline [text part] to view in centre browser. Click controls tab to type. To view, click on timeline.
3.  Any with a red line will need rendering for you to watch it.
4.  Go to sequence – render only – red needs render.

Final Cut Editing your shots on the timeline

Once you have got all of your captured poster frames on to the timeline, you are ready to edit them.

1.    The Razorblade tool
Play your sequence in the timeline. When you see a shot you would like to trim press the space bar to pause play.
Click on the razor blade tool on the right hand side. When you hover over the icon it will tell you it is the razor blade tool.

Position the razor blade tool on the timeline where you wish to cut. The razor blade is drawn to the scrubber bar so it is a good idea to have that where you want to cut.
Click once to make a cut at the point where the razor blade is positioned. The tracks to which the cut applies are determined by whether or not tracks are linked or locked.

Look left – you can see V2, v1, a1, a2 – notice the little padlock? If you don’t want the track above to be cut , lock off the above track.

Click the arrow and then use it to select the bit you have cut it the razor blades. Click it to select it then click delete!

2.    If you jumble it up you will have to
BRING CLIPS BACK INTO SYNC
If this happens you will see a red box
To bring back clips in to sync:
Hold down the control key and click inside the red box where the numeric value of the sync drift is displayed. Control clicking in the red box brings up a dialogue box with 2 possible options.

Select Slip into Sync or Move into Sync and release the mouse button. The item or items selected will now be brought back into sync.

3.    Slow and fast motion
Click once in the timeline and highlight the shot you wish to slow down or speed up.
Go to Modify menu at the top and scroll down to Speed.
Enter a % value to set the speed you wish the shot to play at. If you want to play the clip at half speed enter 50%. If you want the clip to play at double speed enter 200%.
If you see the render line, you will need to render selection.

4.    Extending and reducing clips by dragging

Clips can be made longer and shorter by grabbing hold of either end and dragging the length in either direction. Remember this does change the pace so if you have a grey gap don’t fill it be dragging! Click in the grey gap and choose fill gap.

5. EFFECTS – TRANSITIONS/ FILTERS/ GENERATORS

TRANSITIONS  refer to an effect that is applied between two clips. Examples dissolves, wipes and slides.

FILTERS  can be applied to a clip or part of a clip. They are used to change the look of images by manipulating each of the video frames which make up the image. Examples include blurs, mattes, borders and changes to brightness, contrast and colour.

GENERATORS  are not transitions or filters. These are used to create additional material which you need to work with. These include devices such as slug [black] text and matte colours.

When you have more than one V1 [ more than one layier, you are working with compositing.

6. APPLYING TRANSITIONS
Click once on the effects tab to see drop down menu. Click once on the Video transitions folder this will reveal the list of available transitions. Choose the type of transition you want by clicking on the triangle to the left.  Now choose the transition you want to work with.
Drag the transition on to the edit point in the timeline where you want the effect to be applied.
A red render bar may appear.

Change transition durations – double click on the transition in the timeline  and change the time in the tiny left hand clock.

You can change many settings and the best way is try out different transitions and see what works best for your project.

Final Cut – Filters, Freeze Frames and Making Stills

Freeze Frames

To make a freeze frame double click a poster frame so it appears in the centre viewer. Move the scrubber bar along until you have positioned it exactly at the part you want to freeze frame.
Go to Modify then click Make a freeze Frame.

You will see an icon in the centre viewer. Now insert it onto the timeline by dragging it over to insert. Remember to ensure your timeline scrubber bar is in the right place!

Creating a Still

While your freeze frame is in the viewers go to File – Export then choose Using Quicktime conversion.

This brings up a saver window. Name it. Format = still image.
Click Options and select jpg. Now save it in the correct file/ document area.

Filters

To change the colour/ hue/ brightness etc select a shot on the timeline. In the centre browser choose filters.
In the left viewer choose effects and select Filters. Choose a filter and drag it into the centre viewer. Make changes to the filter and then position the cursor near the blue tick and drag on to timeline over selected shot.
